Volunteerism

There's at least one person like this in every work place: It's the big volunteer, the non-stop community activist, the frantic fundraiser, the sacrificing hero, and the super school supporter.

Each year, hundreds of OCSEA members make generous contributions of their time and money to their communities, neighbors, and hometown institutions, and some have even risked life and limb to make a difference where they live.

Union members also work at the subordinate body or committee level to support community volunteer efforts:

  • The OCSEA Board of Directors Veterans Committee has supported Special Olympics through the Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio.
  • A chapter refurbished a city park for the children of Mansfield.
  • Union Power activists from across the state collected tons of clothing for homeless people and donated them to local shelters and missions.
  • Union members have volunteered their time as American Red Cross volunteers in times of disaster.

Horizon Award  OCSEA's Horizon Award is given each year to one member who demonstrates positive service to the community or individuals in the community, or who has performed an act of heroism in the past year. Union members have the opportunity to nominate their co-employees or chapters to be recipients. Watch for details for the next application period.

CCC  Union members work jointly with management at the agency and statewide levels each year on the Combined Charitable Campaign. State employees raise millions of dollars for charities such as the United Way through voluntary paycheck deduction and other fundraising activities such as cookouts, dress down days, etc.

The Labor Co-Chair is Kelvin Jones, Chapter 2528 President and EPA Assembly Executive Board member. Jones is a member of the OCSEA Board of Directors from Distict Council 6.
